How’s the Weather Up There?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

At the Summer Splash Summer Camp Expo at the Performing Arts Center in Tampa Saturday, a very tall young man (on stilts!) in African garb approached my (Tony the Balloon Guy’s) line of children and told them that he liked me because I could make his favorite animal…

The giraffe! (Get it? They’re both TALL?)

He then pointed out that the children could SEE giraffes at Busch Gardens, as he was promoting Busch Gardens just like I was promoting Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine (as well as Tony the Balloon Guy!).

It was a beautiful day down by the river. Face Painter Phyllis and I and the junior partners of our family business had a nice time! Thanks to all who stopped to see us – and there were a lot of you!

Have a fun day!

Those Nasty Turtles

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I (Tony the Balloon Guy) asked a lad of about 4 what he would like made of balloons at Chili’s last night. He didn’t have an answer, so I gave him a bunch of choices, and then Mom & Dad further prompted him by narrowing down to a few that they thought he might like, including a turtle.

“Turtles might be nasty,” the boy said.

We weren’t sure we heard him right, but, when asked, he repeated it.

I offered, “I could try to make one that’s NOT nasty…”

“Well,” he said, “they got BUTTS!”

What is it about butts?

Wednesday Morning Face Painting (And Balloons!)

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Since last summer, I (Tony the Balloon Guy) have been entertaining Wednesday mornings at 10am at the Shops at Wiregrass. Now Face Painter Phyllis joins me there. Come see us both!

Every Wednesday there is a different “main act,” a storyteller, a magician, interactive drumming, etc. Your little ones will love it.

Driven to Have Fun

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I (Tony the Balloon Guy) drove over to Kissimmee Saturday to do a 2-hour show for grown-ups. The grown-ups were a blast, and we had a great time, and the drive was nice, too. I used to drive to Orlando every Tuesday night to entertain at the Ale House near Sea World, and I had forgotten how pretty Florida is away from the water. (Near the water ain’t so bad, either!)

Job Evaluations

Friday, March 5th, 2010

The other night at a restuarant, a girl drew me (Tony the Balloon Guy) a picture OF me, captioned, “Tony is the Best Balloon Man.” It also said, “I wish you could be at every party I ever have.” Thanks!

Later that night, as a family paused to say grace, the grandma thanked God not only for the food, but for the “balloon master” among them. Another thanks!

The next night at another restaurant, three different families told me that I and Face Painter Phyllis were the reason they had come in. Still more thanks!

It’s nice to be appreciated!

All You Can Sleep

Monday, March 1st, 2010

One of our four-year-old Wednesday-night regulars at Golden Corral found us (Tony the Balloon Guy & Face Painter Phyllis) at Anthony’s Italian Restaurant on Thursday night.

“But… you live at Golden Corral,” he said. “Why are you HERE?”

Apparently he thought we only left Golden Corral to do his birthday party last year and this year. He literally thought we had beds in the back of the restaurant. As one of the junior members of our family business imagined it, Phyllis would wake up bright and early, pop out of bed, and declare, “Time to paint faces!”

Face Painter Phyllis explained to the boy that we don’t LIVE at Golden Corral. “We have a house.”

“Next to Golden Corral?”

Do You Know Who That Is?

Monday, March 1st, 2010

At Denny’s one recent night, I (Tony the Balloon Guy) took it upon myself to make a SCUBA diver and take it over to a young lady who was eating with her baby son, her husband, and her father-in-law. It was a black figure with big yellow flippers and a yellow tank, and clear bubbles coming out of the tank. The mask and eyes were drawn on with a white paint marker. Never made anything like it before. They were crazy over it. The father-in-law approached me a little while later and looked at me, puzzled.

“Do you know who my son IS?” he asked.

Turned out, the woman’s husband is an elite Navy diver – as his father put it, “One of the President’s Men.”

The next week, at the same restaurant, I made an elephant, balancing on a ball, and gave it to a lady. She loved it. Just before she left the restaurant, she approached me, and gave me that puzzled look I’d seen on the diver’s dad.

“Do you know who I AM?”

Turned out, she used to work for Ringling Brothers. And her job had been to buy the food for the elephants.
