Balloon Exchange?

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

We don’t do it often, because there aren’t an awful lot of things we need (that’s a nice feeling), but sometimes Face Painter Phyllis and I (Tony the Balloon Guy) barter a party for some kind of work or product someone else has, instead of charging for the party. Like I say, this has happened only, say three times over the years, so it’s not a big part of our business.

But…

If there is anyone out there who hires out hot air balloon rides, and you have kids or grandkids who would enjoy a party with balloon entertainment, face painting, and/or a pony, we should talk!

I don’t even know what balloon rides cost, but a swap of equal value services would really appeal to me, ’cause I’ve always wanted to fly in a balloon!

Plus, what a neat picture for our website!

Have a fun day!

Back to Brandon

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

A couple years back, I (Tony the Balloon Guy) used to go down to Brandon every Saturday to do balloons for six hours at a Courtesy car dealership.

So it was fun when the Macaroni Grill in Brandon found me online and hired me to come do six hours of balloons for them on Mother’s Day.

Wow, that place was hopping! Nice restaurant, too – everything looked just right, and the staff and customers were very pleasant. I recommend it.

Of course, I also recommend my regular restaurants (IHOP in Spring Hill on Tuesdays, Golden Corral in Brooksville on Wednesdays, and Anthony’s Italian Restaurant in Trinity on Thursdays)!

The biggest surprise of the day? Even though it had been a few years, one of the moms asked, “Didn’t you used to do this at Courtesy?”

With all the balloon folks in the world, it’s nice to make an impression.

I hope Mother’s Day was a good one for all you moms out there!

Have a fun day!

It’s Magic! (Tony the Balloon Guy, a Tampa Bay area – Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg-Lakeland-Tarpon Springs – balloon artist/balloon twister, also enjoys magic, and performs comedy magic shows for children’s parties)

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

When I make my typically beter-than-yer-average-bear balloon art, and kids ask me (Tony the Balloon Guy), “How did you DO that?” I am tempted to fall back on, “It’s magic!” Sometimes the parents say it first. But I usually try to say, “It’s amazing, isn’t it?” since that’s what the kids are trying to communicate in the first place, and they don’t necessarily want that point ignored. Nor do I!

But I also DO magic. Not really at my restaurants, but when I am hired to do a magic show. I do magic shows for Scouts, and I do magic shows for birthdays. I’ve always liked magic, since I was a teeny little thing. And now I’m a BIG little thing.

Some people like magic like other people like the New England Patriots or a new electronic gadget – they’ll talk about it all the time, annoyingly make things disappear and reappear in conversation, throw in technical terms for sleights and gimmicks to see if you’re as smart as they are, etc. Anytime you here a magician say “I’m going to do an effect with a silk” before he does a trick with a handkerchief, that person is a little too highfalutin about magic.

That’s not me (I’m not even like that with balloons!). I just think magic is amazing!

And, of course, being Tony the Balloon Guy, I have to make it funny and interactive, aimed mostly at ages three-to-nine, give or take.

Still, even with all the silliness, a couple weeks ago at a magic show, I did this really cool trick, and I paused because I realized that the trick had taken my own breath away. And I knew how I did it!

THAT’s what magic should be like. And I knew I was on the right track when a young man approached me later in the balloon entertainment part of the party and said that that same trick had so impressed him that now HE wanted to grow up and be a magician. Well, OK, it you’re not going to be a balloon guy, I guess magician is a good second choice!

It’s amazing, isn’t it?

Have a fun day!
